Baby Girl Named Hashtag

babyA baby girl has been born and given the name Hashtag (and no, that isn’t her over there on the right).

Mashable has the skinny on the small one, pointing us, ironically, in the direction of a screengrabbed Facebook post that shows a photo of the baby, and a short status update.

“Hashtag Jameson was born at 10 oclock last nite. She weys 8pounds and I luv her so much!!!!!!” says the post’s text. Underneath there is a cute baby, natch – it’s a baby.

She is sleeping, gloriously unaware that she has been named after something people do on a micro-messaging website.

Popularized by Twitter, hashtags are the # symbol, and used in front of keywords, phrases, or topics. So this girl could simply be known as #Jameson.

Hashtag may prove to be a nice name for a young lady as we slide deeper into the 21st century. It may not.

Fashions change though. While Sophia was the most popular baby girl name in 2011, who is to say that we won’t be calling our kids Blog, RSS, or S.E.O. in years to come? We’ve already seen kids named after Google. And Facebook.

Maybe we’ll even be having to explain what a hashtag was to an assortment of kids with names like “Glubar”, “Kwak”, “Quinquon” and “Kev”.

The whole thing could be a viral prank of course, made to highlight some brand or another, and we could be treated to an explanation soon.

Regardless, we can’t wait for little #Jameson to compose her first tweet.
