Google Pays $18.6 Million Applying for 101 New gTLDs

google-bouncing-balls-logoICANN today revealed its big list of applicants for 1,930 new generic top-level domains. Google has applied to claim 101 of those new gTLD extensions, from .ads to .zip. Microsoft has also applied for .bing, while Yahoo seeks .yahoo.

Google’s gTLD Applications

Google had already announced that it was targeting gTLDs such as .google, .youtube, and .lol, to name a few – at a cost of $185,000 per domain. Now we have the full list – one that adds up to more than $18.6 million, and it isn’t guaranteed that Google will get all the gTLDs it has applied for.

Google is facing competition for ownership of the following gTLDs. Here are those names, followed by the total number of applicants in parenthesis:

  • .app (13)
  • .baby (5)
  • .blog (9)
  • .book (9)
  • .buy (5)
  • .cloud (7)
  • .corp (6)
  • .cpa (6)
  • .dds (2)
  • .dev (2)
  • .diy (2)

  • .vip (6)
  • .web (7)
  • .wow (3)
  • .you (2)

What’s this competition mean for Google? ICANN will be accepting public comments and objections, and they must pass a “rigorous, objective and independent evaluation system,” before being awarded any of these new domains.

“A 60-day comment period begins today, allowing anyone in the world to submit comments on any application, and the evaluation panels will consider them,” Senior Vice President Kurt Pritz said in a statement. “If anyone objects to an application and believes they have the grounds to do so, they can file a formal objection to the application. And they will have seven months to do that.”

Here are the other uncontested domains Google has applied for:

  • .ads
  • .and

Other Search gTLD Applications

In addition to applying for the .bing gTLD, Microsoft also put in two applications that Google has also applied for: .docs and .live. Microsoft’s other applications are for .azure, .hotmail, .microsoft, .office, .skydrive, .skype, .windows, and .xbox.

Yahoo only applied for two of the new extensions: .yahoo and .flickr.

Top foreign search engines have also gotten in on the bidding. Baidu has bid on .baidu while Yandex has applied for .yandex.

Other tibits: Seems nobody has scooped up .seo or .ppc yet. Only one applicant for .social; four for .video; three for .mobile. Also potentially worrying for reputation management: there were three applicants for the .sucks gTLD.
